Oil poised for a rebound as OPEC+ pre-meetings consolidate case for continued tightness
11 June 2019Ahead of the June 25/26th OPEC+ meetings, Saudi Arabia and Russia have discussed the case for extending current supply curbs. An agreement between these oil super-powers usually sets the tone for the wider group. Oil’s lacklustre performance in recent weeks could be reversed if indeed the oil cartel can maintain the current supply-deficit.
US & European stock markets rise on hopes of Fed rate cut
10 June 2019The first week of June got off to a strong start as stocks were bolstered by expectations that the Fed would cut short term interest rates this year. The S&P 500’s performance marked the best week of the year and the index is currently 3% short of its all-time high. Meanwhile, European stock markets such as Germany’s DAX and Italy’s FTSE MIB gained almost 3%; while the STOXX Europe 600 Index and UK’S FTSE 100 rose more than 2%.
Tanking oil prices belie geopolitical risks
04 June 2019Brent oil fell more than 12% last week, reacting to trade-protection related fears. The market appears to have ignored the fact that oil supply is still very tight and risks tightening further. The Saudi Arabian-led emergency security meeting over the weekend should be raising the geopolitical premium in oil, yet with the headlines being supressed to back-pages, the precarious situation in the Middle East appears to be flying under the radar. Oil could stage a substantial rebound in the near future.
